The Shape of Things to Come

This is a piece, foreshadowing the end, which needs to be inputted into the story, and will be upon the second draft. You, my lucky blog nonexistent readers, get to read it first here!

Chronologically this belongs before Atkin leaves, when Zena’s still obnoxious, Sheena’s still frustrated, Jacques’ still clueless, and Nora still has confidence issues.

Petto knocked on the Council door. Zena stopped in the middle of a long, dull sentence about women’s rights or something. Nora was sure she wasn’t the only one glad for the interruption. “What is it, pet?” she asked her little sister, hoping she knew the answer.

“The supply cart’s here,” Petto said shyly.

Something between fear and relief enveloped Nora. “Ok. Guys, I move to adjourn this meeting.”

“Seconded,” Atkin said without hesitation, not looking at Zena.

“All in favor, say aye,” Jacques began the process. Ten seconds later, the meeting was over, and Nora directed her sister home. Once there, she picked up a sack she’d already packed and went to meet the cart.

She recognized the kids who’d come with it. They were the same as last time. That was good. Nora walked up to the skinny redhead. “Hey, it’s you,” he said.

“Yeah. Hi…Nat,” she replied, glad to remember his name. “Do you have it?” Nat checked to make sure there wasn’t a crush of people, and then led her around to the back of the cart. “I’ve got it,” he said, “it wasn’t cheap though.”

“I get it,” she said apprehensively, “what is it gonna cost me?”

“What do you have?”

She offered him the sack. He dug through it, emerging with two books and a tin cup. “These are ok. Anything else?”

Slowly, she reached down and undid her silver anklet. Her mother’s jewelry was less sentimental, but she didn’t think she could handle giving it away. Nat looked at it. He took it.Then he handed her the books and cup back. “That’s pretty. And enough.” She didn’t watch as he pocketed it.

“Here,” he said, handing her a bundle from the cart. Nora took it. Already she could feel the calm seeping into her. “Thanks,” she told Nat. He nodded.
